The best part of our EP offerings however is how specific the classes are:

EP Focus Classes – Bones and Balance

When: Monday 8:20am, 1pm & Tuesday 2pm
What: A class designed to improve your bone health and balance. This is ideal for those with osteopenia/osteoporosis or anyone wanting to maximise bone health and strength during ageing. Evidence shows the importance of resistance and impact training for building bone health, which are key components of this class. These classes will build your balance, bone health, confidence, and strength in a safe and effective setting.

EP Focus Classes – Fitness and Function

When: Monday 7am
What: A class designed to improve your fitness, endurance, strength, and daily function. The aim is to help maintain function as you age and help you feel fitter day to day. Evidence shows the importance of both aerobic and strength training in a healthy life and healthy ageing. This class uses aerobic exercise equipment as well as Pilates, free weights, stability, and bodyweight exercises. This high-energy, fun, and supportive class will be your new best friend in reaching your goals.

Bone Health and Exercise

Bone density loss is a normal part of ageing. We reach peak bone mass at age 30-40, after which natural bone breakdown occurs faster than bone formation without any intervention. While there are non-modifiable risk factors, such as age, family history, menopause, falls history, and co-existing medical conditions/medication, there are also modifiable risk factors that we can control to slow or halt bone loss. These include:

  • Dietary Factors: Ensuring adequate intake of vitamin D, calcium, and moderating alcohol consumption.
  • Exercise: Engaging in strength training, impact training, and balance training.
  • Falls Prevention and Education: Implementing strategies to prevent falls and educating individuals on maintaining bone health.

How Does Exercise Help?

  • Increased Mechanical Stress: Exercise increases mechanical stress on the bones, stimulating bone builder cells to increase bone strength and build new bone.
  • Muscle Mass and Strength: Increased muscle mass, strength, and balance provide better support around the bones, improving the capacity to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), reducing falls risk, and decreasing fracture risk.
  • Psychological Benefits: Improved ability and confidence with exercise and movement can increase community engagement, build resilience, and enhance quality of life.

Recommended Exercise Regimen for Bone Health

  • Resistance Training: 2-3 days per week, 5-12 reps, 2-5 sets. Heavier loads lead to larger improvements.
  • Impact Exercise: 2-3 days per week, 10-50 jumps per session. Significant improvements are seen after >6 months.
  • Balance Training: 1-3 days per week, >15 minutes per session. Focus on both dynamic and static balance exercises.
  • Weight-Bearing Aerobic Exercise: >3 days per week, >20 minutes per session, with an RPE (Rate of Perceived Exertion) of 11-14.
