Sports Physiotherapy
Staying active and performing at your best comes with physical demands, and expert care plays a crucial role in maintaining peak condition. Designed for athletes and active individuals, this specialised approach focuses on injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance enhancement. Whether you’re recovering from a strain, sprain, or a more complex issue, the right treatment plan supports both healing and movement optimisation.
A Targeted Approach for Sports Injuries
At our sports physiotherapy clinic in Prahran, treatment goes beyond symptom relief – it targets the underlying causes of discomfort while strengthening the body to prevent future injuries. With a deep understanding of movement mechanics and the physical demands of different activities, we tailor rehabilitation programs to restore mobility, stability, and overall function. Whether you’re a recreational enthusiast or a professional athlete, every treatment plan is designed to suit your individual needs.
Recovery is more than just passive treatment – it’s a dynamic process that builds long-term resilience. Our sports injury physiotherapy integrates hands-on techniques, exercise-based rehabilitation, and expert guidance to support a safe and efficient return to movement. Whether you’re training for competition or simply want to stay active without discomfort, our active physiotherapy clinic in Prahran provides the care and expertise to keep you moving with confidence.
Our Approach to Treatment
A lot of physiotherapy clinics will put you on a table, do some hands-on work, hand you a sheet of exercises, and send you on your way. As a holistic studio, we do things differently.
Our approach starts with a thorough assessment – not just of the injured area, but of how you move, load, and function as a whole. Pain is often a symptom of something happening further up or down the chain, and missing that is how people end up back in the clinic six months later with the same problem.
From there, we build a treatment plan that’s specific to you: your injury, your activity level, your goals, and your timeline. Whether you’re trying to play in Saturday’s game or get back to pain-free hiking in three months, the plan looks different – and it should.
Specialties Within Sports Physiotherapy
Sports physiotherapy covers a lot more ground than weekend warriors with rolled ankles – though we see plenty of those too. Whether you’re training for a marathon, playing local footy, hitting the CrossFit box, or simply trying to stay active into your 50s and beyond, this is what we specialise in:
Acute Sports Injuries
Muscle strains, ligament sprains, joint dislocations, and fractures — we assess, diagnose, and get you moving again with a clear plan from day one.
Knee Injuries & Rehabilitation
From ACL tears and meniscus injuries to patellofemoral pain and runner's knee, knee rehab is one of our core specialties. We treat the full spectrum, including post-surgical recovery after reconstruction.
Shoulder & Rotator Cuff Injuries
Shoulder problems are notoriously complex. We treat rotator cuff tears, labral injuries, shoulder impingement, and instability - whether you're a swimmer, a tennis player, or a gym-goer who pushed too hard on bench press.
Hamstring & Lower Limb Injuries
Hamstring strains are among the most common and most mismanaged sports injuries out there. We take a graded, load-based approach to get you back to sprinting, kicking, and competing.
Running Injuries
Shin splints, stress fractures, Achilles tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, IT band syndrome - if it's happening below the waist and you run, we've seen it. We combine biomechanical assessment with targeted rehab so the injury doesn't just clear up, it stays cleared up.
Return-to-Sport Rehabilitation
Getting you "pain-free" is only half the job. We use objective strength and movement testing to confirm you're genuinely ready to return to full training and competition.
Strength & Conditioning for Injury Prevention
The best injury is the one that never happens. We work with athletes at all levels to identify physical deficits and build the resilience to stay on the field, track, or court.
Post-Surgical Rehabilitation
Whether you've had a knee reconstruction, shoulder stabilisation, or hip arthroscopy, we provide structured, progressive rehab programs aligned closely with your surgeon's protocols.

Treatment Options
The therapies we use include:
- Manual Therapy & Soft Tissue Work Hands-on treatment to reduce pain, restore joint mobility, and improve tissue quality. This includes joint mobilisation, manipulation, and targeted soft tissue release – used where the evidence supports it and where it moves your recovery forward.
- Exercise Rehabilitation This is the backbone of what we do. Progressive, targeted exercise is the most powerful tool in physiotherapy, and we take it seriously. Sessions aren’t just supervised stretching — they’re structured programs designed to rebuild strength, stability, and movement quality.
- Dry Needling Used as an adjunct to other treatment, dry needling can be effective for reducing muscle tension, managing trigger points, and accelerating recovery from soft tissue injuries.
- Clinical Pilates For patients who benefit from core stability work, postural correction, or low-load progressive loading — particularly those recovering from spinal injuries or returning to exercise after a long layoff – clinical Pilates offers a structured, physio-guided environment.
- Biomechanical & Movement Assessment We assess how you run, squat, jump, and move to identify the mechanical contributors to your injury. Understanding why it happened is just as important as treating the injury itself.
- Load Management & Return-to-Sport Planning We use objective data – including strength testing where appropriate – to map out a clear, safe return to full activity. You’ll know exactly where you are in the process and what milestones you need to hit.
Throughout your care, you’ll be educated on what’s happening in your body and why. Our goal isn’t to make you dependent on treatment — it’s to get you to a place where you understand your body well enough to manage it yourself.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sports Physiotherapy
Do I need a referral to see a sports physiotherapist?
No referral needed - you can book directly online or by phone. If you're coming through a GP Management Plan (EPC/Medicare), bring that along and we'll take care of the rest.
Will my private health insurance cover it?
Most extras policies include physiotherapy, though the amount varies by fund and policy. It's worth checking with your provider beforehand - or just ask us when you book. We accept all major private health insurance providers.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Wear or bring comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area we're treating. Any recent scans or imaging reports are helpful if you have them, but not essential.
How long will my recovery take?
It depends on the injury, how long it's been present, and how consistently you can follow the program. At your appointment we'll be able give to you an honest, personalised timeframe.
How many sessions will I need?
We'll be upfront about this from the start. Some injuries resolve in just a few sessions; others - particularly post-surgical rehab or long-standing issues - require a more sustained commitment.
Do I have to be an athlete to see a sports physio?
Not at all. Sports physiotherapy describes an approach, not a clientele. Whether you've hurt yourself training for a half marathon or sitting at a desk, the same evidence-based care applies.
Can you help with an old injury that never fully healed?
Yes - and it's more common than you'd think. Many persistent issues come down to incomplete rehab the first time around. It's rarely too late to address them properly.
What's the difference between a sports physio and a regular physio?
Sports physiotherapists have advanced training in athletic injury, load management, and return-to-performance rehab. The focus extends beyond pain relief to restoring full function - so you're not just feeling better, you're moving better.
