Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy
At Sum of Us Studio, physiotherapy is centred around one core principle: movement is fundamental to health and wellbeing.
The pelvic floor is one of the most important and least talked-about parts of the body. A group of muscles, ligaments and connective tissue that supports the bladder, bowel and uterus — it plays a role in continence, core stability, sexual function, and comfortable movement throughout daily life.
When it’s not working well, the impact can be significant. The good news is that most pelvic floor conditions respond well to physiotherapy — and far more can be addressed than many people realise.
Our pelvic health physiotherapists hold postgraduate training in this area and work with people of all genders across every life stage. Assessment and treatment are always personalised, always evidence-based, and delivered in an environment where you’ll feel comfortable asking the questions you’ve perhaps been putting off.
Who Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy Is For
Pelvic floor physiotherapy covers a broader range of conditions than most people expect. We work with clients experiencing:
- Bladder leakage — with activity, urgency, or both
- Overactive bladder and urinary urgency or frequency
- Pelvic organ prolapse
- Pelvic pain, including pain with intercourse or penetration
- Vaginismus
- Endometriosis-related pelvic pain
- Bowel concerns, including incontinence or difficulty emptying
- Abdominal separation (diastasis recti)
- Pre and postnatal pelvic floor support
- Recovery following gynaecological or prostate surgery
- Men’s pelvic health — including post-prostatectomy incontinence and pelvic pain
You don’t need to be symptomatic to benefit. Pelvic floor physiotherapy is also valuable for birth preparation, return-to-exercise guidance, and general pelvic health education.
What To Expect At Your Appointment
Your first appointment begins with a thorough conversation — about your symptoms, history, and goals. There’s no pressure to jump straight into assessment; we move at your pace.
Where relevant, your physiotherapist may recommend an internal examination to assess pelvic floor muscle function directly. This is the most accurate way to understand what’s happening, but it’s always optional. If you’d prefer to start with an external assessment, we’ll work with that — and you can always revisit the option later.
From there, we’ll put together a clear treatment plan. Most people leave their first appointment with a solid understanding of what’s going on and practical steps they can take straight away.

We aim to help you achieve the following outcomes:
- Reduced or resolved bladder leakage
- Better control over bowel and bladder function in daily life
- Less pelvic pain — during everyday activity, exercise, or intimacy
- A stronger, more functional pelvic floor
- Confidence returning to exercise, sport, or movement after pregnancy or surgery
- A clearer understanding of your body and what's contributing to your symptoms
- Practical strategies you can use independently — not ongoing dependency on treatment

Pelvic Floor Physio FAQs
Do I need a referral to see a physiotherapist?
No referral is required to book a physiotherapy appointment at Sum of Us Studio. However, if you are claiming through Medicare, DVA or certain private health rebates, a referral may be required.
Can my pelvic health physio appointment be bulk billed?
In most cases our physiotherapy services are not fully bulk billed. If you have an EPC plan from your GP, Medicare may rebate a portion of the appointment cost and a small gap fee applies.
Is pelvic floor physiotherapy only for women?
No. We treat people of all genders. Men commonly present with pelvic pain, post-prostatectomy incontinence, and bowel concerns - all of which respond well to pelvic floor physiotherapy.
Is the internal examination mandatory?
Not at all. Internal assessment is the most accurate way to assess pelvic floor muscle function, but it's always your choice. We can work with external assessment techniques if you prefer, and revisit this at any point.
When should I start pelvic floor physio during pregnancy?
Anytime during pregnancy is appropriate, though many people find it most useful in the second trimester onwards — covering birth preparation, pelvic girdle pain, and building a foundation for postnatal recovery.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies depending on the condition and how long it's been present. Many people notice meaningful improvement within a few sessions; more complex or long-standing conditions require a longer commitment. We'll give you a realistic picture at your first appointment.
Can I come just to learn more about my pelvic floor, without a specific complaint?
Absolutely - and we'd encourage it. Education and prevention are a big part of what we do, whether you're preparing for pregnancy, returning to exercise, or simply want to understand your body better.
