Pregnancy Physiotherapy
Your body is doing something remarkable - and we're here to support it
Pregnancy brings significant physical change – and with it, a range of musculoskeletal demands that can affect how you move, sleep, and feel day to day. Some discomfort is common. That doesn’t mean you have to put up with it.
Pregnancy physiotherapy at Sum of Us is delivered by practitioners with specialist training in prenatal and postnatal care. Treatment is hands-on, evidence-based, and built around your stage of pregnancy, your history, and what you’re actually experiencing.
Whether you’re managing pain, preparing your body for birth, or looking for guidance on staying active safely throughout pregnancy, we’re here from the first trimester through to postpartum recovery.
What We Help With
Pregnancy physiotherapy addresses a broad range of conditions. We commonly treat:
- Lower back and pelvic girdle pain – including sacroiliac joint pain and pubic symphysis dysfunction
- Pelvic floor concerns – weakness, heaviness, or leakage during pregnancy or postpartum
- Diastasis recti (abdominal separation) – assessment, management, and safe return to exercise
- Round ligament and hip pain
- Sciatica and nerve-related leg pain
- Rib and thoracic pain as the body adapts to a growing belly
- Carpal tunnel syndrome – common in pregnancy due to fluid retention
- Postural changes and associated neck and upper back pain
- Birth preparation – including perineal massage guidance, positioning, and breathing techniques
- Postnatal recovery – returning to movement, exercise, and daily life after birth
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Your first appointment begins with a thorough conversation about your symptoms, stage of pregnancy, and goals. From there, your physiotherapist will assess your movement, posture, and the specific area of concern.
Treatment is always adapted to pregnancy – so hands-on techniques, exercises, and any load-bearing work are selected with your safety and comfort in mind. You’ll leave with a clear understanding of what’s happening in your body and practical steps to manage it between sessions.
Our physios tailor treatment to changing needs across pregnancy, helping maintain function and confidence while preparing for postpartum recovery.

Common Questions
When should I start seeing a pregnancy physiotherapist?
Any time during pregnancy is appropriate. Many people come in when pain or discomfort arises, but there's real value in starting earlier - particularly for pelvic floor education, birth preparation, and building a foundation for postnatal recovery.
Is physiotherapy safe throughout pregnancy?
Yes, as treatment is always adapted to your stage and presentation. We use techniques that are appropriate and well-evidenced for use during pregnancy, and your comfort and safety guide every session.
Can you help with postnatal recovery too?
Absolutely, and we treat a range of concerns in postnatal mums - whether for pelvic floor rehabilitation, abdominal separation, return-to-exercise guidance, or pain that's persisted after birth.
Will my private health insurance cover my session?
Most private health extras policies include physiotherapy- however, we recommend checking your specific entitlements with your fund beforehand. Get in touch with our team if you need further clarification.
